How To Give to The Derbyshire Community Foundation

Charitable Trusts

If you operate a Charitable Trust, Derbyshire Community Foundation can offer you our experience and expertise to make the management of your Trust efficient and effective.

We can offer you a Named Fund, held and administered by the Foundation, where you can determine the good causes that benefit from your Fund.

Thinking of Setting up a Charitable Trust?
Derbyshire Community Foundation offers an alternative to establishing a charitable trust with a fast, flexible and cost effective way for donors to channel their charitable giving for the lasting benefit of the local community, Setting up a named fund within the Community Foundation is easy and we handle all the legal and administrative requirements and offer a tailor made service to match your charitable aspirations.Currently Managing a Chartiable Trust?

Anyone involved in the administration of a charitable trust knows how much hard work and effort is required to ensure that it runs efficiently, effectively and in line with the Charity Commission’s statutory requirements.

Why not consider transferring the trusteeship of your Fund to the Foundation? You will then have a “Named Fund” within the Foundation, which would be professionally managed in line with your objectives. The Foundation will  take away the administrative burden and offer a professional grant assessment service. Your involvement can be tailored to suit your individual requirements.

About Us
Derbyshire Community Foundation is dedicated to improving quality of life and helping to build stronger communities across the county by building an endowment fund to benefit Derbyshire people in perpetuity. The Foundation also distributes funds across Derbyshire on behalf of local, regional and national government agencies, through a variety of grant-making programmes. Why Use Derbyshire Community Foundation
  • Individual statutory accounts are not required
  • No need for a separate audit or to file with the Charity Commission
  • We assume the increasing burdens on Trustees following regulatory changes (Trustee Act 2000 & SORP 2000) and future proposed changes
  • The Foundation can act on behalf of donors who wish to remain anonymous
  • A board of independent Trustees oversee the work of the Foundation
  • Donors can be sure that their charitable wishes will be honoured in perpetuity
  • Professional fund managers manage your funds as part of our portfolio
  • An annual charge covers all administration, grant making and investment management costs
  • Donors can be involved in how the money is used and can become actively involved in the Foundation
  • Alternatively, they can use the expertise of the Foundation to determine the most effective use of the funds
  • The Foundation can respond to new challenges and social concerns as they arise
Setting Up A Fund
Donors have three separate choices to make regarding the type of Named Fund they want to create. These are:
  • Unrestricted or Field of Interest
  • Discretionary or Advised
  • Endowment or Pass Through

Unrestricted Named Funds
Ideal for donors wanting to help the most urgent and changing community needs. Leaves grant making decisions to the Foundation’s grants committee and Trustees.

Field of Interest Funds
Enable grants to be made within specific agreed limits.  These may be defined in one or a combination of the following ways: geographical area (e.g. a town or district), beneficiary group (e.g. children, people with disabilities, older people) and purpose (e.g. training, equipment, holidays)

Discretionary Funds
Enable the Foundation to make grants without prior reference to the donor, either generally or within the limits of a specified field of interest.  The donor will receive details of all grants made by way of regular reports at agreed intervals.

Advised Funds
Enable donors to become more involved in grant making decisions if they so wish.  The extent of involvement can vary according to individual preference.

Endowment Funds
Funds are invested for the long-term, under professional management, with the aim of long-term growth of capital and income.  Grants are made from the income earned year by year.  Such funds enable the Foundation not only to make grants today, but also increase its capacity to meet the community’s future needs.

Pass Through Funds
These funds are used to make grants in the short-term, usually within a year of receipt.  Such funds increase the Foundation’s capacity to meet current needs.
