Tom Carey Fund awards its first grants to local groups
The newly established Tom Carey Fund has awarded its’ first grants to two local community groups.
The first lucky recipient was Derby City Credit Union, who received £6,000 to set up and launch a branch of the credit union within the Abbey ward of Derby city. The establishment of this branch will help with financial education in the area and aims to help reduce financial stress on local residents.
The second grant was awarded to Bramblebrook Community Association in the Abbey ward of Derby city, who received £5,000 towards a new carpet, tables and chairs for the centre. The Tom Carey Fund panel felt that this community centre has the potential to become a real hub for the local residents and were keen to provide financial support to help improve the facilities.
Sarah Hand, Assistant Director for Grants at the Foundation, commented “the response to the launch of the Tom Carey Fund, by the local residents of Abbey ward, has been very positive” she added “the Foundation is delighted to be administering this fund and looks forward to receiving applications from community groups in the area”.
The Tom Carey Fund is aimed at projects or organisations working within and benefiting the Abbey Ward that are addressing the needs of their local community, or the needs of a specific group of people, and can show that they are supporting community life and encouraging social inclusion. Applications are also welcomed from projects or organisations in neighbouring wards, particularly if they can demonstrate/evidence provision of services and facilities to Abbey residents.
