Surviving Winter Campaign

Surviving Winter Campaign

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free state benefit that's paid automatically each winter to all eligible older people to help them keep warm.  This is a vital payment for many older people who desperately need this support to ensure they can afford expensive heating bills. But for some pensioners who are more affluent they may feel that their automatic allowance is not critical to them and many would like to give some or all of it to help other vulnerable people in their local community. Alternatively there will be general members of the public who also wish to support elderly residents at risk in winter. For them there is a new opportunity do this through Derbyshire Community Foundations ‘Surviving Winter Appeal’

Donations to the Derbyshire Surviving Winter Appeal will be used to support individual older residents by directly relieving financial hardship. This will be done through partnership working with Age UK Derby & Derbyshire who use workers on the ground to identify those most in need. Grants are usually around the £125 mark

To donate you can send a cheque made payable to Derbyshire Community Foundation, with Surviving Winter marked on the reverse. For other methods of donating please contact Sarah Stainthorpe on 01773 514854

5.4 million Households are living in fuel poverty and almost half of those are aged over 60. Last winter there were an estimated 25,400 excess winter deaths.  Cold weather exacerbates coronary & respiratory illnesses, illnesses associated with older people. For every winter-related death there will be dozens of people suffering illness and hardship, a choice between eating & heating, isolation and depression are other factors entering into the mix.
