Making a real difference

"People often say that charity begins at home”, explains Lucy Palmer, a founding donor with her husband. I already knew that there was need on our own doorstep but finding out exactly who in the county required what and the best way of reaching them was quite a different matter. We had no idea where to start, until we were introduced to Derbyshire Community Foundation by the then Chairman Brian Ashby.”

It was surprisingly easy to set up a named fund with the Foundation to try and address the local issues that really concern us. We soon came to learn that a huge amount of invaluable work is done by small and relatively unknown groups and organisations. With the support and expertise of the Community Foundation, who assess and monitor all of the groups that we fund, we now are in a better position to help.

1st Shipley Rainbows

1st Shipley Rainbows formed in September 2010. The unit was started because there was no provision close by and therefore filled a gap in the services in the area. 

A grant from the Locko Fund enabled them to purchase a range of arts and craft materials, games and contributed towards rent. A wide range of activities are provided which aim to give each girl life skills such as social interaction, helping each other and enjoyment.

Stanley Village Pre-School

Stanley Village Pre-School has 37 children registered, aged 2 to 4 years old. 

The grant was to fund a range of equipment to enhance the use of the pre-school's space in the village hall where it is based. It has enabled the pre-school to meet the requirements advised by OFSTED whilst giving the children a more inviting and relaxing environment to play in.
